Howard is from an Alabama cotton mill town, he left there to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps. Howard was drawn to New York City by the lure of art. Howard attended the Whitney Studio program and later became Donald Judd’s assistant. However, Judd’s minimalist style did not get passed on to Howard who is revered for his innovative ideas that almost always include audience participation and a concentration on painting.
