Magdalena Abakanowicz
Magdalena Abakanowicz was born in 1930, in Poland. She studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts from 1950-55. She has received honorary doctorates from the Royal College of Art in London and the Academy of Fine Arts in Lodz, Poland. She began creating soft sculptures in the 1960s called "Abakans" which gained her an international reputation and the opportunity to participate in the Sao Paulo Biennial. Her most famous works are sculptors of headless figures made out of burlap and resin, later on out of bronze. Her work can be seen at Ludwig Museum, Köln, Germany; Musee d'Art Modern de la Ville de Paris, France; Sezon Museum, Tokyo, Japan; Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, Spain; Nelson Atkins Museum, Missouri, USA; Centre for Contemporary Art, Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw; and in other public and private collections.
